Ensure your silent background scripts actually run.
What is it? Passive, inverse monitoring. You append a unique PingStag Webhook URL to your backend scripts. If PingStag doesn't receive a 'ping' on schedule, we alert you.
A nightly database backup script fails silently due to a server update. You don't know it failed until a month later when your database crashes and you realize you have zero backups to restore.
Understanding the Technology
Cron Jobs are scheduled tasks executed automatically by a server's operating system in the background. They are critical for automating routine operations like daily database backups, clearing temporary caches, generating monthly invoices, or syncing data with third-party APIs. Because these tasks run silently in the background, a failure (due to code errors, full disks, or permission changes) produces no visible error on the website frontend. These silent failures are notoriously difficult to detect until the missing data causes a catastrophic business failure.
Traditional uptime monitoring cannot track background tasks because there is no public URL to 'ping'. PingStag solves this via 'Heartbeat' (or Dead Man's Snitch) monitoring. PingStag generates a secure, unique URL for you. At the end of your bash script or Cron job, you simply add a command (like `curl`) to request that URL. PingStag acts as a listener. If the heartbeat is not received within the predefined timeframe (e.g., 24 hours), PingStag assumes the task failed and alerts the DevOps team immediately.
